Q: What was Daiches attitude towards the week-end as a school boy? Why did he long for it?

Ans: Daiches felt very happy at the week-end. Friday had a happy flavor of the end of the week. On a Friday afternoon, he walked home like an escaped prisoner. Friday night with two holidays lying ahead was the best night of the week. Therefore, he wished for the weekend. (Expand this answer according to the knowledge of this Chapter)

Ans: Daiches often enjoyed the actual class-room work. He was not a weak student. But the daily work of the school, a lot of homework, the hard competition among the students and a sense of not being relaxed pressed him heavily. Ans: Daiches liked holidays for they gave him freedom from the school’s boring work. He felt to be free from the boring routine of school’s life. He did not like the daily work of the school. However, a lot of homework, the hard competition and the sense of not being relaxed pressed him heavily. Therefore, he felt free during holidays. Q: Wishes don’t come true in his life?

Ans:  Daiches was a poor child. He spent his early life in poverty. He like other children wished many things but he could not have them in his life. He longed desperately for a bicycle which his parents could not afford and later it was transferred to bicycle but he did not get it too. He got it at the age of twenty-one with prize money he had won at Edinburg University. He often stood out-side of the shops with empty pockets longing for a penny or two to buy something. He often stood outside of a crowd around an Ice-Crème barrow wondering whether the Ice-Cream man would be miraculously inspired to offer him a “cornet” or a “slider” free. But these things happened.

Q: Compare Daiches state of mind or Friday morning to that of Monday morning? 

Ans: Daiches state of mind on Friday and Monday morning was totally opposite to each other on Monday morning, he had a pressure of daily grind of school, with its abundant homework. Its fierce competition sense of never being relax but on Friday morning was mentally relax. It last period of Friday whatever the subject was, had its special happy flavour for him because there lies a weekend ahead. That’s why he called himself as an escaped prisoner on Friday evening.

Q: What are blessed breaks? What are unexpected respites? 

Ans: Unexpected respites are the unexpected holidays which daiches and his fellows get because of unsuitable conditions like a half holiday to let us attend football match. Sudden dismissal of a School an hour or two before the usual time because of some unexpected crisis or celebration. These holidays were few and far between them or in winter if these had been a continuous hard frost for some days we get whole days off He called these respites as blessed brakes in daily routine.

Q: What was Daiches concept about holidays?

Ans:  Daiches due to daily grind of school life, its hectic homework and sense of never being he felt himself relax. That is why he termed Friday morning as positively rose-coloured. He also liked the unexpected respites i.e. holidays given due to bad or inappropriate situations. He termed these holidays as blessed breaks. He also wanted Easter and Christmas holidays Midterm holidays made him relax and summer holidays which were a period of permanent relax for him. He loved them all.

Q: What was dismal experience of daiches?Q: Why he called the sound of maid as summon of damnation? 

Ans:  Summon of damnation means a sound or order to throw to hell. Daiches termed his maid’s  sound as damnation sound it was because at every morning maid climb up with her grim step up to attic floor where Daiches and his sister Sylvia and brother Lionel slept and announced in deep funeral tones “Lionel, David Sylvia time!” He wanted to take some extra doze but he could not. There was always pressure of stretching hours of school on his head. The oppressive load of knowledge always laid on his head so he called his maid’s sound as sound of damnation.

Q: What did Daiches do with his pocket money?

Ans: Daiches, his sister and brother would get a few pence pocket money a week from their parents. They were not allowed to spend it according to their own will.
