CHAPTER 15

"THE ANGEL AND THE AUTHOR AND THE OTHERS"

EXERCISE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Answer the following questions, each in about 40-50 words:
Q.1 & 2.At what point of the journey in his dream did the author hear the throbbing sound of wings? What time of the year was it? What would the people be doing at that time?
Ans: In his dream, the writer flew over the London heights. He entered darkness when he heard the throbbing sound of wings. It was about a fortnight (two weeks) after Christmas in January. The people would be working at different places after a long Christmas vacation.

Q.3. What does the author like about Christmas? Do we like our religious festivals the same way?
Ans: The author likes Christmas because people became generous (helpful to others) and good during this time. We perhaps do not like our festivals the same way because our society is generally poor. Very few people can be generous and helpful to others.

Q.4. Write the good deeds the author has admitted as a great joy on Christmas.
Ans: These good deeds are: the writer’s subscription of ten shillings to the Fund for the unemployed, sending his dozen photographs to a charity bazaar, his contribution to the fund for poor church fathers.1 For further use if desired: 1 Other examples are: contribution to the fund for penniless people in South Africa, sending all his old clothes to a sale for help to churches or schools and his taking part in a fund-raising rummage sale (a sale at which old clothes. Toys, etc. are sold) to help a school or church.

Q.5. Why are noble deeds always a great joy for the author?
Ans: It is because noble deeds are proof of our goodness and generosity. They make us really good and spiritually satisfied. They make us truly helpful and kind to others. They give us incomparable joy that comes to a person who serves and helps others.

Answer the following questions, each in about 40-50 words:
Q.1. Who is the writer of the story “The Angel and the Author---and Others?” What is the value of the story
Ans: Jerome K. Jerome is the writer of the story. Its value lies success in connecting our worldly life with the other-wordly life. We often think of angels and their work and the results of our doings in their hands. This story tells about our feelings and the work of the angles.

Q.2. When did the writer have his vexing (troublesome) dream and what did he see in it?
Ans: The writer had his vexing dream two weeks after Christmas. He dreamed that he had flown out of his room window in his nightshirt. The world grew smaller as he rose upward. He saw the part of London under him, which was the long line of electric lamps.

Q.3. What was the London scene that the writer saw when he flew out of his room window?
Ans: The London scene was the long line of electric lamps boarding the Embankment or wall of earth to hold back water in the river. As the author moved upward, he saw only a faint light covered by darkness.

Q.4. When and what did the writer hear behind him, and who was following him/
Ans: When the writer was seeing the London scene, he heard behind him the slow throbbing sound of wings. When he turned his head, he saw the Recording Angel. The Angel had a tired look.

Q.5. Why was Christmas a trying (difficult) period for the Recording Angel? Explain.
Ans: It was a trying (difficult) period for the Recording Angel. He had to record or write all the good deeds of men and women at this time. These deeds were too many. He got very tired while recording all of them in his book.

Q.6. Why do you think the writer had a dream about the angel recording his good deeds?
Ans: Every sensitive person considers the way he  is acting or working in life. The author felt that his good deeds would be liked by God, and his bad deeds would be disliked by Him. Then, while asleep, he began dreaming about them. He wanted to be favoured by the angel recording his deeds.

Q.7. What does Jerome K. Jerome say about keeping a diary for the good of one’s children?
Ans: A diary of good deeds can be a great example for one’s  children. Children like to know facts about their  parents. They like to read about their noble acts or deeds. They like their parents for writing about themselves truthfully. Then they like to act like them in life.

Q.8. What kind of person in your opinion is the writer to have thought of his actions before death?
Ans: The writer appears to be a very noble person with high thoughts. He was one of them who like to do good deeds and avoid bad deeds. That is why he wanted to know from the recording angel about the record of his good deeds. He desired to have God’s favour (grace) on the basis of his good deeds in life.

Q.9. Do you ever have dreams like the writer about your good and bad deeds in life/
Ans: Surely, I have dreams about my actions or performances in life. I like (prefer) to have dreams about my good deeds. But I am not perfect. I have done badly in life, too. The bad deeds of mine come to me in dreams to give me pain and sorrow.

Q.10. Explain the title of the story.
Ans: The title means the good angel who recorded the good or noble deeds of the writer and others. The writer dreamed that he was flying towards heaven or the other world. On the way, he found an angel flying after him. He talked to the angel about the good deeds that he had been performing in society.

Q.11. Explain the theme or central idea of the story.
Ans: The writer’s experience after his imagined death is the theme or main idea. He dreamed that he had died. He began flying towards the sky. He saw London, his city, under him from a distance. Then he saw an angel flying after him and recording his good deeds.

Q.12. What the moral or lesson of the story?
Ans: The moral is that we should always try to perform good deeds and live honestly. When we are in the other world, we may be able to have a fine record of the life we lived in this world. Even in our dreams, we may have our good deeds and work before us.
