' Patriotism '
Patriotism means love for one's own country. This love for one's country is natural. We live in it; we breath its air, we drink its water, eat its food and enjoy its sight. Even beasts love their homes. If a man has no love for his country, he is worse than a beast.
Patriotism is one of the noblest virtues. A true patriot always thinks in terms of his country. He takes a leading part in the defence of his country. He is always ready to work for the welfare of his countrymen. He tries his best to improve the moral and economic conditions of his people. A patriot lives for his country and dies for his country. He is selfless. He does not sell his services or does not demand price for his past services. He loves his country truly and intensely. He is tolerant towards others. He loves mankind but does not love his countrymen less.
The spirit of patriotism provides people the power and guts to protect the benefits of the country and nation. The uncompromisable values for a patriot are supremacy, honour and glory of the country. A patriot vigorously supports to the high moral principles regarding to country and does not make any deal on these principles. People who love their own country are ever ready to lay down their lives for the defense and safety of their high moral principles.
Patriotism has certain dangers also. People cut each other's throats in the name of patriotism. Intense patriotism also leads to the hatred of others. True patriotism does not mean ill-will to foreigners. You can love your child without hating the child of your neighbour. Similar is the case with nations. We must always remember that a foreigner is first man and then a citizen.
Patriotism is not only a sense of affection towards the country but also an animate passion which constantly motivates and directs the whole nation. S.W. Scott says that unpatriotic man is like that person who breathes with dead soul. Apparently, he seems to be alive. But spiritually he is dead because he has no feeling for his native land.
