       "MY FAVOURITE BOOK"

Books are treasures of knowledge and libraries are knowledge banks. Book reading is a very good, habit. Indeed, it is a necessity of life of an educated man. Fortunately I am far fond of reading books. Most of my time is spent in the libraries and in the company of books. I do not claim to be a scholar, yet I have gone through many books and studied a wide range of books of Urdu and English Literature.

Literature is the depiction and reflection of society. The writer takes stories and characters from real life and describes in his own peculiar style which is mild and effective. The lesson taught through these devices are more effective than verbose and bore lectures. Sometimes, writer describes very hard and harsh realities in a sweet and mild manner. The study of literature develops in the readers and insight that help them in solving the problem of real life. The study of the role and behaviour of fictitious characters enable us to understand the psyches of the characters who come across us in our daily life. Although I have gone through many books and find all the books very useful, but the book, rather a booklet that impressed me most of all is the Hemingway's novel " The Old Man And The Sea ".

"The old man and The Sea" is a short novel. It is a bit longer than a short story but much shorter than a full a full length novel. It was the last novel of Hemingway and got a tremendous fame. In addition to number of qualities, the most remarkable feature of this novel is its style which won the Nobel Prize in literature for its author in 1954. The writer has expressed his ideas and feelings realistically in the most simple and straightforward manner without taking the help of literary artifices.

"The Old Man and The Sea" is a different type of novel. Its story is different from the romantic and imaginative novels. The author does not want to entertain the readers by narrating some story of love or to excite their feelings of joy or sorrow. Nor does he want to take them to some ideal word of high ambitions and dreams. Rather he wants to tell them a very serious and purposeful story which excites their minds and provides them food for their thoughts. This novel can be called a moral Fable. The writer wants to show that human life on the earth is a kind of continuous struggle which is full of numberless problems and difficulties , successes and frustration.Man is born to be wasted by age and circumstances. But he should make his life purposeful and exemplary. What makes human life admirable and enviable is the high aims and noble ambitions which require heroic spirit to achieve them.

Through the story of old man's struggle to against the fish, Hemingway wants to convey that success and defeat do not matter much, because they are in the hands of fate. The real thing is the heroic struggle and the doing of one's best in the adverse circumstances. This idea has been explained through the story of old fisherman who remained unsuccessful in catching any fish for three month but he did not lose heart and the next day went deep into the sea with a new zeal and zest.

The story teaches us a lesson and encourages to continue struggle. There are so many lines in the novel which should be written in golden ink but this line has changed my life and give me a new direction.

"Man can be destroyed but not defeated."
I like this novel most of all for its moral and educative value.
