"Allama Iqbal-Our National Poet"
Allama Muhammad Iqbal is our national poet. He belonged to a respectable middle class Kashmiri family of Sialkot. He was born in 1877, and educated at the local Govt. High School and Murray College. He showed signs of talent and genius as a poet even as a school student. Maulvi Mir Hassan, an eminent scholar of Arabic and Persian, was very helpful to him at the college stage.
He joined the Govt. College, Lahore and took his M.A. degree. Here Dr. Arnold encouraged this young man in his pursuit of knowledge. After his M.A. he proceeded to Europe and travelled over most of the countries. He took his Doctorate in Philosophy and degree in Law. Bus his fame rests as an immortal poet thinker.
He awaked his community through his stirring poetry. In the session at Illahabad in 1930, he said that the Muslims were different from the Hindus. Therefore, they neededa separate country to live according to their culture. He suggested that the areas of Muslim majority should be made a separate Muslim country.It would secure peace for the nations inhabiting in India. His speech, in this session, reveals his concern for his nation. He was the first to conceive the idea of Pakistan, but he did not live to see his dream realized. He passed away in 1938.
Iqbal leaves behind a rich treasure of poetry, both in Urdu and Persian. It reminds the Muslims of their glorious past and gives them hope for the future. His death was a great loss for the Muslims. He lies buried at the foot of the Shahi Mosque, Lahore. May the Muslims of new Millennium be inspired by the illuminated thoughts of Iqbal's poetry.
