Why in conductors charge is transferred by free electrons rather than by positive charges?

Q: Why in conductors charge is transferred by free electrons rather than by positive charges?
Ans: Conductor means material having a large number of free electrons. In all material positive charges are bound to their respective nuclei. When potential difference is applied across a conductor the free electrons, mobile charges move under the influence of electric field and but positive charges are bound.
